FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Grade 3-4 Camp
I caught up with students when they returned from the camp. They were tired but were able to tell me their favourite part of the camp, no one said they didn’t have fun. Thank you to our volunteers who went along to support our teachers. Without your support these activities are not possible. Thank you to the staff that planned and attended the camp. I also want to mention our administration staff that prepare documentation for all our excursions.
Breakfast Club
A huge thanks for all the donations that arrived this week. We had some bread, jams, apples, bananas, and even some fruit boxes. I really appreciate your generous support in providing breakfast for our students at Spreyton Primary School. I would also like to thank our parent volunteers for your time and assistance.
School Colour Run
Prep/Arrell have been the top fundraising class for three weeks in a row. Miss Arrell has been wearing the special fundraising cape with pride. Can any class win the fundraising crown. We will find out at our assembly on Friday.
Every Day at School Counts
We have a busy term ahead with Tadpole Swimming P-2, Swimming and Water Safety Grade 3-6, Grade 3-4 camp just completed, Grade 5-6 camp next week, Grade 6 transition activities, public holidays, and end of year celebrations. There is also a great deal of teaching and learning that needs to occur before the end of the year.
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
Crossing the Line
Our schools should be respectful, positive and safe places – for students, teachers, school staff and the whole school community.
To achieve this, it’s important that all adults work together and communicate respectfully to get the best outcomes for the kids. This includes parents, carers and school staff.
We all experience everyday pressures and frustrations. It’s sometimes easy to forget this, and our actions, messages or furious typing can quickly lead to disrespect and distress.
If you have an issue to raise with a teacher or school staff member, remember to stop and think about how you communicate.
This is also the case in the online world. Remember there is a real person, just like you, on the other end of your post, comment or email.
Adult behaviour in and around school impacts everyone. Help us to eliminate disrespectful behaviour in our schools and create the best environment possible for our kids to learn.
Disrespect in our schools is crossing the line. Simple as that.

We are happy to announce the launch of a new canteen service at Spreyton Primary School. Meercroft Café will be providing a weekly service every Wednesday, commencing on the 6th November 2024. This initiative aims to provide our students with healthy, delicious, and freshly prepared lunches that cater to a variety of tastes and dietary needs. Meercroft Café use the same Spriggy app that our previous canteen provider used, so many of you will already be familiar with this. Details of how to download the app are below along with a copy of the menu.
HOME READING AT SPREYTON PREP - GRADE 2
In Prep to Grade 2, our school has sent home short books designed to help your child practise the reading skills they are learning in class. Many schools have used a Home Reading program that ranks books by level of difficulty from 1 to 30. According to the latest research, these “levels” do not always accurately measure a child’s ability to read. Based on this new insight into reading development all Tasmanian schools are phasing out this levelling system, Spreyton included.
Rather than being ranked in difficulty, the Decodable books are organised by the letters and sounds they are focusing on. They have been designed to build your child’s confidence in reading as they match what they are learning at school. You can support your child to read these books by helping them sound out words. When your child has mastered all the letter-sound relationships they need for reading, they will move on from decodable readers. For some children this will happen in Grade 2 or earlier. Other children may need to keep using decodable readers for longer. Decodable readers that have been written to appeal to older students are also available.
As our replacement texts resource grows, children in Prep to Grade 2 will bring home “Decodable” readers. These books are specially written to match the letter-sound relationships your child is learning in class. Our levelled texts will be repurposed for broader usage: general interest, practice for extension, and shared reading at home.
At Spreyton we are in a transition period and are gradually building our decodable resources to match the needs for both home and school usage. For a while Home-Readers will be a mixture of previous ’levelled’ texts that will be coloured coded into broader grade groups rather than levels.
In Grades 3-6, your child will still bring home books to read from school. These books are likely to be related to their interests. Encourage them to spend time reading every day. Even 10 minutes will support their learning. If they are reluctant readers:
- Try comic books or graphic novels.
- Offer to read with them – you read one page, they read one page.
- Offer to read to them.
- Encourage them to listen to an audio book which they can borrow for free from your local library or Sora App
If you have any questions on how you can further assist your child in developing essential reading skills, please contact your child’s class teacher.
