Nathan Gratton
As Term 3 wraps up at Spreyton Primary, it's a great opportunity to reflect on all that our students and staff have accomplished. It’s been a busy and rewarding term, with highlights including Book Week, the Devonport Eisteddfod, our Kinder Father’s Day celebration, sporting carnivals, excursions, sharing assemblies, Family-Teacher Meetings, the Student Wellbeing Survey, and numerous opportunities to showcase evidence of learning. These events show just how many rich opportunities our students have had to learn and grow, both in and out of the classroom.
This term, our school value focus was Responsibility. We’ve seen students step up in lots of ways – taking charge of their learning, helping each other out, and showing care for our school and grounds. These are the everyday actions that make our school a positive and respectful place, and they’re skills our students will carry with them well beyond primary school.
I want to take a moment to acknowledge our staff, especially. Their dedication, flexibility, and creativity have been at the heart of everything achieved this term. A big thank you also goes to our families for your ongoing partnership and support, and, of course, to our students – well done on your efforts and growth throughout Term 3.
Looking ahead, Term 4 is shaping up to be another very busy and exciting term, with overnight camps, our Learn to Swim Program, and all of the end-of-year activities that bring our school community together.
I hope everyone enjoys a safe, relaxing break. We look forward to seeing you all back for the final term of 2025.

DEVONPORT EISTEDDFOD

On Friday, the twelfth of September, about 140 nervous and excited students participated in the Devonport Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod is a competition in which school students can perform on stage in front of other school students and members of the community. It was a very busy day with multiple bus trips moving our various music groups between school and the Paranaple Centre. The students were great ambassadors for the school, showing respect for their fellow performers and our staff as they organised the students so that the day ran smoothly. Congratulations to all performers for their commitment to their music group, their growth as they learnt their songs and instrumental pieces, and for their resilience in overcoming nerves to perform. Here are the results and some of the adjudicator’s comments.
Grade 1-2 Choir | 3rd place | Lovely voices, good energy and beautiful smiles that captured the audience's attention. |
Senior Choir B | 3rd place | Confident, uniform voices with tonal variety. Secure part work. |
Senior Choir A | 3rd place | Well-shaped phrases with clear entry and cut-offs. |
Recorder Year 3 | 2nd place | Rhythm and notes are accurately played. A tight performance. |
Recorder Year 4A | 3rd place | Some beautiful and secure tone was produced. |
Recorder Year 4B | Highly Commended | Notes are played accurately with a smooth and flowing character. |
Recorder Year 5 | Highly Commended | A clearly projected melody line and some beautiful tone produced. |
Recorder Year 6 | 3rd place | Well-balanced tone between the parts with some beautiful harmonies. |

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING - 2/3 Bramich
Term 3 has been a busy time in year 2/3, filled with lots of wonderful learning.
In Maths, our recent focus has been on understanding fractions as numbers that represent parts of a whole. One of our favourite activities involved exploring our own names through fractions. We used our knowledge to divide our names into equal parts, represent them on a number line, and even worked out what fraction of the letters in our names were vowels and consonants. This activity helped us see how fractions can be used in everyday contexts and gave us great practice in thinking mathematically and creatively.
In HASS, we’ve been learning all about Australia. We’ve been using a range of geographical tools – including globes, maps, and online images – to locate and name the states and territories of Australia. We also practised our research skills to investigate Australia’s neighbouring countries, identifying their locations and directions using cardinal points.
As part of our exploration of Australia, we also learned about some of the most famous landmarks, including the iconic Sydney Opera House. Inspired by its unique design, we used oil pastels to create our own colourful drawings of the Opera House. Students enjoyed experimenting with colour and using shading techniques to capture the shape and beauty of its sails. It was a fantastic way to connect our learning in HASS with visual art, and it was wonderful to see each student’s creativity shine through their artwork.
We look forward to continuing our exciting learning journey as we head into Term 4!

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY - Term 3

During Digital Technology lessons, students have been learning how to use school devices safely, responsibly, and confidently. Students started the year by going through the Department of Education ICT Conditions of Use Policy. This helped them to understand how to use school devices properly and respectfully.
In each lesson, students make sure they sign in and sign out correctly.
Prep to Grade 2 uses a shared login. Grades 3 to 6 use their own personal login.
Term 4 will see Grade 2 start using their own login, and Kinder children will have weekly Digital Tech lessons until the end of the year.
Students took part in activities from the eSafety Commissioner website. The activities taught how to
- Be an eSafe Kid
- Block and report anything that makes them feel unsafe
- Know what to do if someone is being cyberbullied
- How to keep personal information private
What Students Have Been Doing
All students have been busy building their digital skills! Here are some of the awesome things they have done:
- Opened and saved Word documents, then found them again in the right folder
- Used Outlook email and cleaned up their folders
- Created posters about Being Safe Online, a Wellbeing Collage, a three-course menu, and school values: Courage, Respect, and Responsibility
- Practised typing using fun websites like TypingClub, Jungle Junior, and TypingBird
- Made a PowerPoint about Hardware and Software and how digital technology works
- Took part in Wellbeing and Digital Technology check-ins each term
In Summary
We’ve had a fantastic time learning how to use technology safely and creatively. Students are becoming confident digital citizens and are excited to keep learning more!

WELLBEING - Term 3

Wellbeing – Term 3 Summary
Focus areas during our Wellbeing lessons during Term 3 have been Responsibility, Kindness, Bullying Awareness & Emotional Regulation
What have students been doing?
Understanding Responsibility
- Students explored what responsibility means—doing what they are expected to do and accepting the results.
- We learned about different types:
- Moral – doing what’s right.
- Social – helping the community.
- Collective – sharing duties in a group.
- Individual – being accountable for your own actions.
- We discussed consequences—positive or negative outcomes based on our choices.
Social Responsibilities
The focus question was: What are my responsibilities as a friend?
They explored this question through brainstorming adjectives that describe friendship qualities. Workbook sentences reflected:
- What a person looks for in a friend
- What kind of friend are they
- What their friends appreciate about them
Bullying No Way & Kindness
- All students participated in Bullying No Way week.
- We created “Say No to Bullying” leaves with promises to speak up and be kind.
- Leaves are displayed on the Wellbeing Tree.
- Kinder to Grade 3 focused on being kind and being a good friend.
- Grades 4–6 reviewed the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey questions.
- We enjoyed the NED Show, which reminded us to:
- Never give up
- Encourage others
- Do your best
Types of Bullying
- Students learned about:
- Overt bullying – easy to see (e.g. hitting, name-calling).
- Covert bullying – sneaky (e.g. mean looks, leaving people out).
- Indirect covert bullying – secret (e.g. rumours, gossip).
- Grades 4–6 participated in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
- Kinder to Grade 2 explored faces and feelings – how emotions show on our faces and what makes us feel different ways.
Zones of Regulation
- Students began learning more about the Zones of Regulation – They have been learning how to do a Zones check-in, noticing and identifying how they feel throughout the day. During a Zones Check-in, we pause to think about our body signals, our emotions, and to name the Zone we are in.
- A Zones Check-in helps us discern and make sense of our feelings. It makes it easier to share or communicate our feelings with others. This helps children figure out if and how to regulate themselves.

SUNSMART POLICY - SCHOOL HATS

REMINDER. In line with our Sun Smart Policy, it is a requirement that hats are worn whenever students are outside, starting from Monday, 15th September. A small supply is available from the Office $14.00. Remember, NO HAT - NO PLAY.

BREAKFAST CLUB - Join Us!

Breakfast Club is such a special part of our mornings – a chance for students to gather, have breakfast, and start the day feeling settled and ready to learn.
We’re so thankful for the ongoing generosity of our families. Simple donations of butter and bread go a long way in helping us keep Breakfast Club running smoothly.
In Term 4, we are looking for more family volunteers please. If you ever have a spare morning, we’d love for you to join the team of helpers who make this happen each day. It’s a relaxed and friendly way to connect with students, staff, and other parents while giving our kids the best start to their day.
If you’d like to contribute in any way – whether by donating or lending a hand – please let the office know. Your support truly makes a difference.

RECYCLE REWARDS FOR BREAKFAST CLUB

Want to contribute to Breakfast Club but don’t have the time? Now there is a new way to help.
We have set up Breakfast Club to receive Recycle Rewards donations when you deposit your drink containers at your preferred depot. Simply download the Recycle Rewards app on your smartphone, locate Spreyton Primary Breakfast Club in the list of charities, and then set us as your active payout. Note: this can be changed at any time. Then go to a depot and deposit your containers. Someone is there to help you if needed. Your donations are also helping Vinnies and the environment, so it’s triple benefits for your effort!
We need to find ways to keep Breakfast Club sustainable moving forward, and this is a cost-free way for parents and children to contribute to this much-appreciated service. It’s also an excellent opportunity to get other family and community members involved. So spread the word to grandparents, relatives and neighbours.
The depot closest to us at Spreyton is at Wigmore Road, just off Kelcey Tier Road and the rear of Woolworths Carpark, Oldaker St, Devonport.
Thanks in advance.

'THIS IS US' ART PROJECT
This is Us: View Point
Some of our Senior Landcare members created the human effigies, and our younger students painted them. The final step will be to attach the viewpoints of students and community members to the back of these figures (we’re still waiting for some parent viewpoints). The figures will then circle a globe, with the figures looking at the globe. The installation will be on display in the gym on Friday afternoon this week.
The work will be exhibited at the Devonport Little Gallery from October 6th to November 14th. There will be an official opening on October 17th at 6:00 p.m. at the Gallery. An official poster is in this week’s newsletter.
