John Hudson
End of Term
Yes, it is very hard to believe that it is the end of Term One. It has been a busy term with our Athletics Carnival, Inter-Primary Athletics Carnival, NAPLAN, School Association AGM, Open Classroom, School Photos, Progress Reports, a great deal of staff professional learning, and a great deal of student learning.
I wish everyone a wonderful holiday and Easter period!
Breakfast Club
Thank you for all your wonderful donations of hot cross buns. They have been a hit with children visiting Breakfast Club. Recently, we surveyed the students on which fruits they liked best and which they liked least. Based on that feedback, we have adjusted our order. Many thanks to Squibb’s Orchard Shop, which delivers quality fruit to our school twice a week.
Thanks to the school community for the ongoing donations of bread that supplement our supply from Spreyton Bakery.
Our community is very generous and giving. I have noted the donations piling up for Coats for Kids. I am sure many at-risk children in Tasmania will benefit from your donations this winter.
School Cross Country
Our school Cross Country event will be run on the second Monday of Term 2, 5th May 2025. More information will be provided at the beginning of Term 2.
New Playground
Exciting news. A new playground will be installed in the Prep-2 area at the beginning of term 2. The same contractor will modify the spinner to reduce water pooling under it during heavy rain. This was possible because of a $10,000 donation from the School Association, Colour Run fundraising money, a $20,000 grant from the state government, and school funds. The 2024 Student Council were active in the design of the playground.

SunSmart
We recently renewed our SunSmart Policy Accreditation. Thanks to Jemima Hamer who helped us with this. One change to our SunSmart Policy is that school hats will be worn until the end of April, and we will begin wearing school hats again from September 1. These are the times when the UV is at Level 3 or above.
Therefore, hats will be worn for the first three days of Term 2. Please remind students.
No Standing Zone at Back of School
This is just a friendly reminder that there is a no-standing zone in the turning circle at the back of the school. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Introducing Our New School Association Committee
We are pleased to introduce the newly elected members of our School Association Committee following our recent AGM. This dedicated group of volunteers plays a vital role in supporting our school community and fostering collaboration between parents, staff, and students to ensure the best outcomes for everyone.
Office bearers for 2025:
- Chairperson: Kelly Grey
- Deputy Chairperson: Kelly Wilson
- Secretary: Jemima Hamer
- Treasurer: Tracy Cole
In addition to our office bearers, we extend a warm welcome to Kelly Wilson and Nikita Radford, our two new committee members.
We look forward to a productive year ahead and encourage our school community to engage with the committee. Your input and involvement help shape the future of our school. If you have any ideas or would like to contribute, please reach out to one of our committee members.
Kind Regards

SCHOOL ASSOCIATION SAUSAGE SIZZLE AND BAKE STALL - Election Day 3rd May, 2025

On the upcoming election day (May 3rd), the School Association will be hosting a sausage sizzle and bake stall in the courtyard from 9:00 a.m. until mid-afternoon. We will be calling on the school community to donate baking for our stall and help out on the BBQ if possible, even for a short period of time.
We will put out a detailed announcement and call for volunteers early in the first week of
Term 2. The funds raised will support Breakfast Club and other projects the School Association is currently working on.
Thanks for your support.
Kelly Grey
CHAIRPERSON
PLAIN CLOTHES DAY - Friday 11th April, 2025
This Friday, the Student Representative Council will be holding a Plain Clothes Day. Students are invited to wear casual clothes in exchange for a gold coin donation.
All donations raised will go towards our playground upgrades.
Please remind students to wear appropriate clothing for school activities. On Friday morning, a member of the SRC will visit each classroom to collect donations.

FOYER DISPLAY - Natural Disasters

The Grade 5/6 classes have been learning about Natural Disasters as part of a combined HASS / Science Unit.
In Grade 5/6 Stocks, we watched some videos about volcanic eruptions.
From the videos, we posed some inquiry questions that we wanted to find more information about.
We worked with a small group to find answers to our questions. To show what we have learned, we have created information posters.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING - 1/2 Baker
In 1/2 Baker, as part of HASS, we learnt about Harmony Day, which is held on the 21st of March each year. This event celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and brings together people from all different backgrounds. The theme every year is ‘everyone belongs’, and people often wear orange to show their support.
The students wrote and drew about their culture on a quilt square. This included the language students speak at home, where they were born, where they have travelled to and their favourite home-cooked meal. We put our squares together to make a class quilt and this is displayed in the classroom.

TERM 1 WELLBEING

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING
School Belonging – Positive sense of culture and identity and participating – Connection and Belonging.
Schools are places that nurture students to develop the social and emotional skills that are essential for good health, happiness, and success in life (DECYP, 2025).
CONNECTION AND BELONGING
Kinder: Our youngest school members have been focusing on feeling loved, safe, and valued, getting used to walking to the Wellbeing room, forming a confident relationship with Mrs Allen, and establishing positive learning behaviours such as kindness, sharing, cooperation, taking turns, and following instructions. Children practised their speaking and listening skills, colouring in and reading a story about saying “I’m Sorry.”
This week, Wellbeing lessons have focused on “How can I make a positive difference in my community?” All students from Prep to Grade 6 have explored how we can transfer our values from the classroom into the broader community by displaying kindness, respect, and responsibility.
Spreyton Primary School is again going to be part of COATS FOR KIDS, a statewide community effort to ensure that no disadvantaged, vulnerable, or at-risk Tassie kid goes without a warm coat this winter. Tassie Mums are aiming for one thousand coats to be donated.
All students wrote a letter to their family asking for any unused or unwanted coats, raincoats, vest, or warm jackets.
Our focus question was “how can I make a positive difference in my community and what does “community service” mean?
Community service means spending time helping others and contributing to their local community through activities like volunteering, cleaning parks, or donating to charities, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy.
Community service involves doing things that benefit the community, like helping people in need, improving local spaces, or supporting local organisations.
Why is it important?
• Develops Empathy and Compassion: By helping others, we learn to understand and care about the needs of people around us.
• Teaches Responsibility: Participating in community service teaches us to take initiative and be accountable for our actions.
• Boosts Self-Esteem: Helping others and making a positive impact can boost our confidence and self-worth.
• Builds Skills: Community service can provide opportunities for us to learn new skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
• Fosters a Sense of Community: Engaging in community service helps us feel connected to our neighbourhood and understand how we can contribute to a better place for everyone.
If you able to, please donate. Items can be left at the office or in the Wellbeing Room.

BEFORE SHARING ONLINE CONSIDER:
• Who can access the information?
• What others may do with shared information?
HOW CAN I PROTECT MY CHILD’S PRIVACY WHEN THEY ARE ONLINE?
• Update the privacy settings on devices, applications and software your child uses.
• Play online games with your child and see what kinds of information they may be sharing.
• Get to know the apps and devices your child is using.
• Ask your child for permission before sharing or tagging photos of them.

LIFTING LITERACY AT SPREYTON

Our school is continuing to work hard to improve the reading achievements of our students (along with the support families provide outside the school environment).
From the wonderful oral language and pre-reading experiences being provided to children in LiL and Kindergarten, the focused phonics teaching in Prep to Grade Two through Letters and Sounds, and the extension of spelling skills through Word Origins in Grades 3 to 6.
Word Origins is a new spelling program that most schools across Tasmania are using.
Our Primary staff participated in training at the start of the year and are now implementing it with students. The program provides explicit teaching and builds on previous knowledge. It focuses on the base or root words and the morphemes, the smallest units of letters that have meaning ( -ly, -est, pro-, un-…). Students also gain knowledge about the word's etymology (history).
If you have any questions about Letters and Sounds or Word Origins, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school.

SPREYTON 5/6 BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
The Grade 5/6 Boys' Basketball team, consisting of Jaxon W, Hudson C, Indy H, Xavier W, Patrick C, Tander K, and Jayden P, competed in the Basketball Tasmania Regional Primary School tournament. There were 347 teams across the state for both weekends and 3243 players taking to the court.
They had huge success over the weekend and finished undefeated, winning 4/4 games in Division 2.
All the boys represented the school to the highest level of sportsmanship, while playing and respecting each other as a team. The level of encouragement from each player was absolutely amazing with cheering and high 5's, down to each time out with all players getting in a circle and cheering " on 3 1,2,3 SPREYTON. "
The boys listened and practiced the coaching tips to achieve their success
As the coach of this team for the weekend, I feel honoured to be part of their achievement, and to see such talent from the whole team was incredible.

COACH
