TERM 4 2025 WHAT'S HAPPENING

SPREYTON PRIMARY SCHOOL VALUES AWARD RECIPIENTS - 17th October, 2025

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING - Physical Education Term 3 & 4
Students at Spreyton are fortunate to receive two PE lessons per week (Prep-Grade 6). Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are “traditional” lessons where there is a particular skill focus. Thursday and Friday are aimed at fitness and fun.
Term 4 is the final chance for students to apply all the fundamental movement skills developed and practised during the year.
Terms 1 and 2 are primarily dedicated to locomotor skills (walk, run, jump, hop, skip, gallop, etc), striking with hand, foot and implement, and throwing and catching.
A Games Sense approach is used to enable skills to be practised whilst playing a game or a modified version of a game. This means students play a familiar game with a newly learnt skill incorporated into it.
Skipping
Kinder – familiarisation with long ropes, jumping a stationary rope, leaping over a moving rope, and introducing a turning rope.
Prep/Grade 1/2 – jumping, moving ropes, jumping and turning ropes, introducing independent rope turning, and short rope skills.
Grade 3-6 – students explore long rope skills, short rope skills, and multi-rope skills. Many of these tasks can be done individually or in a small group.
Hockey
This year, Hockey Tasmania visited the school to provide a highly specialised two-week introduction to hockey. All grades participated in age-appropriate activities, being introduced to genuine hockey sticks, hockey balls, and shin pads.
Sofcrosse
Kinder – Kinders used a highly modified scoop to practice picking up the ball, throwing it in the air, throwing it to a partner, and catching a moving ball.
Prep/ Grade 1/2 – These students consolidated the use of a scoop before being introduced to a full-size Sofcrosse stick. This was used to scoop up the ball, throw it, and catch it.
Grade 3-6 – students are expected to use the stick to scoop, throw and catch. These skills are then used to play an outside game of Sofcrosse. These skills were shared on the Seesaw app.
Volleyball
Kinder – students use a large soft ball to practice their throwing and catching. The volleyball net is introduced as an object to throw the ball over. Culminating in a game using the net and a volleyball court, where students throw a ball over or under the net.
Prep / Grade 1 – Students reinforce their large-ball skills, including catching, chest pass, shoulder pass, and overhead passing. They are introduced to the concept of hitting or striking the ball, as in volleyball. They finish with a game of over and under.
Grade 1/2 - Students reinforce their large ball skills or catching, chest pass, shoulder pass, and overhead passing. They are introduced to the concept of hitting or striking the ball, as in volleyball. The final activity is to play a game of Newcombe ball, which is throwing and catching the ball to make it go to the other side of the net.
Grade 3-6 – Primary students spend all their time practising the fundamental volleyball skills, dig, set and serve. Each week, new rules of the game are introduced, leading into the final week of gameplay. Students umpire their own games and begin with newcombe ball and move into volleyball play.
Kinder – Using a modified Frisbee, the concept of a sideways throw is introduced. Students practice throwing a frisbee, catching a frisbee and experience a standard frisbee outside.
Prep/Grade 1/2 – the concept of the sideways throw is reinforced, a standard frisbee is used, and the game of frisbee golf is introduced.
Grade 3-6 – Primary students refine their throwing of various frisbees, become more competent at catching a frisbee and play a round of frisbee golf on the school oval.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Aside from the normal PE lessons, many students have been involved in extra activities. Some of these are school sporting teams, some are special events that have a selection process, and some are opt-in events.
Term 1: School Athletics Carnival, North-West Athletics, Soccer in Schools clinics, Devon Junior Soccer roster, Devon Netball Association Winter Roster, Devonport Basketball Council Winter roster and Devonport Tennis Club tennis challenge.
Term 2: Futsal tournament, Walk to School Day, School Cross Country, North-West Cross Country, Symmons Plains and Hook into Hockey Clinics.

DEVONPORT CITY COUNCIL - Master Plan for Maidstone Park
Devonport City Council is developing a Master Plan for Maidstone Park to help guide the future use and development of this important community space.
We’re inviting students, families, and the wider school community to share their ideas about what would make Maidstone Park an even better place for sport, play, and community activities. Your feedback will help Council explore opportunities and options for the park in a well-informed way.
The community survey is now open, and we’d love to hear from your school community. It can be accessed through any of the following links below:
The survey will remain open until 9:00 am, Thursday, 23 October 2025.
Thank you for supporting this project and helping shape the future of Maidstone Park for our community — and for the next generation who’ll play there!
Warm Regards
